Renting a boat sounds like the easy answer. You want to get out on the water for a day, you find a rental on Lake Lewisville or Lake Texoma, you pay the fee, and you go. Simple enough; right up until you start adding up what it actually costs.

We hear some version of this story almost every week at Freedom Boat Club. Someone spent a summer renting boats, enjoyed every trip, and then did the math at the end of August. The number surprised them. It surprised them enough to come ask us about membership.

We're going to lay out that comparison honestly because if a rental makes more sense for you, we'll tell you that too. But for most North Texas families who get out on the water more than a handful of times a year, the math lands somewhere very different than people expect.

What does it actually cost to rent a boat in North Texas?

Boat rental prices on Lake Lewisville and Lake Texoma vary depending on the platform, the boat type, and the season. On peak summer weekends, a half-day pontoon rental typically runs $300–$450. A full day lands at $450–$650 or more, depending on the boat. Premium options - tritoons, deck boats, wake boats - push higher.

That's before fuel, which is usually extra and adds $50–$150 depending on how far you go and how hard you run the engine. Some platforms charge a security deposit. Some charge a cleaning fee. Platform service fees add another 10–15% on top of the listed price.

A realistic full-day rental for a family on Lake Lewisville or Lake Texoma in peak season: $600–$800 all in.

Do that four times this summer and you've spent $2,400–$3,200. And you have nothing to show for it in September; no ongoing access, no community, no reciprocal rights at other lakes. Just four good days on the water.

What does a Freedom Boat Club membership cost by comparison?

Freedom Boat Club of North Texas offers several membership tiers. The Weekday Plan gives you access Tuesday through Friday, perfect for members who can be flexible with their schedule and want to avoid weekend crowds. The Freedom Plan gives you full access six days a week.

Monthly dues vary by plan, and entry fees apply at joining. We'd rather walk you through the numbers in person so we can tailor it to how you actually use the water so call us or schedule a tour and we'll give you the full picture.

What we can say plainly: members who get out on the water four or more times a year almost always find that membership costs less than renting the equivalent experience. Members who go eight, ten, or twelve times a year, and many do, once the boat is always available and there's no planning friction find the value multiplies quickly.

But it's not just about the price

The math matters, but it's only part of the story. There are things a rental simply can't give you.

When you rent, you get whatever boat is available on the day you book. When you're a member, you choose from our premium fleet; pontoons, tritoons, bowriders, center consoles, deck boats and you book through the app as far as six months in advance. You know exactly what you're getting and when.

When you rent, you handle fuel, you figure out the dock on your own, and if something goes wrong, you're managing it yourself. When you're a member, our team meets you at the dock, the boat is ready, and we handle everything behind the scenes. Walk on, boat, walk off.

When you rent, your access ends when the day ends. When you're a member, your access extends to 400+ Freedom Boat Club locations worldwide including 10+ Texas locations like Lake Travis, Galveston Bay, Corpus Christi, Lake Conroe, and Rockport.

Your membership works every time you travel.

And the training. Every member gets unlimited, free training by Coast Guard Captains at every skill level, whenever you want it. Renters get a 10-minute orientation and a wave goodbye.

So when does renting actually make sense?

Honestly? If you're boating once or twice a year — a birthday trip, a one-time summer outing — renting probably makes sense. You don't need a membership for two days on the water.

But if you're the kind of person who finds yourself looking up rental availability every few weeks, wishing you could get out more often, or doing the math and wincing at what the summer cost; that's the person a membership was built for.

Most of our members tell us the same thing after they join: they didn't realize how much the friction of renting was holding them back. When the boat is always there, always ready, and all you have to do is book and show up - you go more. And going more is kind of the whole point.

Come see it for yourself

The best way to understand whether membership makes sense for you is to come take a tour. We'll show you the fleet, walk you through how booking works, and answer every question you have - with no pressure and no obligation.
